Back to The Brushes with Sonia Delaunay!

Sonia Delaunay in Paris 1925

Finally! A week after arriving back in Amsterdam from my High Point Market adventure I found time to go back to the basics: painting....
First day at High Point I still felt insecure, falling back in to the habit of sellling myself short ("I am more of a decorative painter..."), but the positive feedback from designers, retailers and press made me feel confident. There is no shame in failing to be a "technical" briljant painter and "just" being a decorative painter. To speak with the fabulous artist-designer Sonia Delaunay "For me there is no gap between my painting and my so-called "decorative' work. I never considered the 'minor arts' to be artistically frustrating: on the contrary, it was an extension of my art." Sonia is one of my heroines.  She brought her art in to the every day life and therefor closer to the people and that is exactly what I am striving for. Heather Clawson of Habitually Chic recently did a wonderful posting on Sonia as there is currently a "must see" exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum Color Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay. Dear Sonia, thank you for moving me, Mx.

Note: Did you know that Sonia has a connection with Amsterdam. In the 30s she designed textiles for Amsterdam Department Store Metz&Co!

  1. Mariska...I think it all goes back to the old saying..Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and what you may not see...others do! Which is why you are where you are ...because of your creative brilliance..and so for the days when you may doubt that...you will have all your followers here to tell you otherwise :)
Its so wonderful to find someone who's we look upto..it is those people that keep us striving and believing..that if you think you can....you can.
Sending big hugs your way lovely x

  2. Dear Anna, thank you for your supporting words. Yes WE all can! It is a bumpy road but if we can sustain a bit of bruising it is more than worth it!

  3. How lovely to see you back and I can't wait to see what you create next. It's always refreshing, colourful and makes me smile. And I'm sure that every bit of positive feedback was thoroughly deserved. Give yourself the credit that others are only too willing to give to you. You are inspirational yourself..you know that right?

  4. I am so happy to have found your blog! You have so much talent and are brave for choosing a path that is more fulfilling. I can totally relate to this post, and several of your others... especially about going into areas of business that are unfamilar- I'm just learning about product design- and I find you inspirational and refreshing. I look forward to following!
